Electrical Characterization of Materials

ModuLab   ModuLab XM Materials Test System

The ModuLab XM MTS is a new concept in testing the electrical properties of materials. The system uniquely combines time domain tests (I-V, pulse, ramp), and AC tests (C-V, Mott-Schottky, impedance, permittivity), together with a wide range of modules providing high voltage, high current resolution, and high accuracy sample / reference AC measurements. Temperature control and sample holder accessories add to the capabilities of the system.

  • Market leading impedance analysis
  • Widest voltage and current range available
  • Ultimate ease of use and flexibility with time Domain and AC test capability
  • Materials Test and Electrochemical analysis in one unit
  • Market leading high-efficiency temperature control options

The system users to choose “plug and play” options best suited to the materials to be tested. This cost-effective approach avoids the need to purchase options that are not needed, while retaining the flexibility to easily add them at a later date if required.

Model 1260A
Model 1260A
Impedance/Gain-phase Analyzer (FRA)

The model 1260A Impedance/Gain-Phase Analyzer is - without doubt - the most powerful, accurate and flexible Frequency Response Analyzer available today. In daily use by leading researchers wherever measurement integrity and experimental reliability are of paramount importance, the 1260A’s solid reputation is frequently endorsed in published research papers in fields such as:

  • Corrosion studies
  • Battery research and fuel cells
  • Solar cells
  • LCD''s
  • Bio-materials
  • Ceramics / composites
  • Electronic component development
  • Civil engineering

One of Solartron Analytical’s extensive range of precision products designed to provide cost effective solutions for AC analysis in electrochemical and materials research, the 1260A offers an outstanding measurement specification for impedance spectroscopy, with a frequency range extending from 10 µHz to 32 MHz

Model 1296A 1296A Dielectric Interface

The development of modern high impedance, low loss materials has meant that further advances in measurement technology have been required. We therefore specifically designed the Model 1296A Dielectric Interface to extend the measurement capabilities of our frequency response analyzers for the materials test market. This dielectric test system allows the user to investigate the frequency response of a material over an extended impedance range (up to 1014Ω), and under varying experimental conditions of AC amplitude control, DC bias to 1 kV AC or DC, and temperature.

Analyzing low conductivity, low loss materials stretches the capabilities of even the best frequency response analyzers (FRAs). Used alone, they lack the sensitivity required for accurate measurements, especially at low frequencies. When used in conjunction with one of our FRAs, the Model 1296A Dielectric Interface overcomes these issues allowing fast, accurate impedance measurements from 100 Ω to 100 TΩ with 1 in 65,000,000 resolution. In addition, the dissipation factor of low loss materials can be characterized with accurate tan delta measurements of less than 10-4

The 1296A is used together with SMaRT software with one of the following Frequency Response Analyzers (click the links for more information):

Model 1294A Model 1294A Impedance Interface

The model 1294A offers an alternative to the model 1296A for measuring electrical impedance of a wide range of materials.  The 1294A is certified to IEC601, allowing tests on live subjects in accordance with this standard.
Like the 1296A, the 1294A is used together with SMaRT software with one of the following Frequency Response Analyzers (click the links for more information):

Model 129610A  Model 129610A LHe LN2 Cryostat System

This cryostat system, a customized version of the Janis Research Company''s model STVP cryostat is a versatile research tool, designed to operate between 5 K and 600 K. The sample itself is located in an inert, dry, static exchange gas, (e.g. helium), which ensures that the sample is not affected by exposure to cryogen vapor.
Liquid nitrogen (LN2) or liquid helium (LHe) can be used as the cryogen depending on the required operating temperature range. This allows standard tests to be performed using relatively low cost LN2 as the cryogen. Higher cost LHe can be substituted for the duration of tests where very low temperature is required, providing an economical solution to your test requirements.

Applications include

  • Development of advanced polymer materials
  • Pharmaceutical applications including drug delivery and freeze drying
  • Semiconductor materials
  • Composite materials and coatings
  • Display materials
  • Aerospace materials

Model 12962A Model 12962A, 12963A, 12964A Sample Holders

The Model 12962A sample holder is designed to allow accurate impedance tests of solid materials to be performed at room temperature. The sample holder comprises of two parallel electrodes, one of which is fixed in position and the other which can be moved into contact with the sample by adjustment of a micrometer. The sample holder makes use of guard ring and reference techniques in order to improve accuracy by reducing “fringing” effects at the edge of the sample. The standard electrode provided is 20mm diameter.

Model 12963A electrode kit
This auxiliary electrode kit for the 12962A sample holder allows measurements of different sizes of materials. 10, 30 and 40 mm electrodes are supplied in this kit.

Model 12964A liquid sample holder
The liquid sample holder also makes use of guard ring techniques and is shaped as a container in order to be able to measure small samples of liquid or powders. The sample holder is easily dissembled for cleaning.
